Everything You Should Know About Rock Pools

By Jason Long

The oceans are very fascinating water forms, but are very mysterious at the same time. It is said that less than five percent of it has been explored and the remaining ninety five percent, well no one knows anything about that yet. This is why anything that is discovered in relation to the deep is treated with utmost care as well as with high regard due to the fact that it is not an easy area to explore.

Tidal rise and fall of sea levels is a natural phenomenon that is caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun, combined with the rotation of the earth. A common misconception held by many people is that when the tide recedes, not a trace of water can be found in the shallow areas but this is wrong. If one is curious enough, one will discover rock pools or water that is enclosed in rock formations and is home to many organisms like plants and animals that need water to live.

Depending on the type of rock, the communities that are established in these pools are will vary from one another. However, most that are found in them or those tiny creatures that will easily be carried by strong waves which is why they shelter in them. Naturally, high tides cause these formations to be filled with water and some who shelter in them often leave the rocks to find food.

A lot of things can be benefitted from such formations like the fact that they serve as protection for preys from predators. But it does not just stop there because even mankind can benefit from them through conserving and exploring their elements. And just like many things that need to be well minded off, there are several things to remember when dealing with them.

Wanting to see and witness the beauty and amazing things that exists in one is normal and in doing this, you must know how to be calm. Because water is easily disturbed, it causes vibrations to which the creatures are very sensitive of so moving slowly and quietly is the key to being able to see them up close. Stand or sit next to the pool and wait patiently because they will then be scampering around the formation in no time.

Many of them find shelter beneath rock formations, so ensure you do not as so much touch these rocks. If you do so, however, be sure to return them to their original state, orientation and location in mind. Also, remember to do this slowly as there may be other organisms that you may crush in doing so.

But being careful does not only stop there because you need to be careful in stepping on the rocks. They can be slippery due to the water or mosses on them so do not move around too much and remember to take careful steps. Also, keep your eyes open for corals or other things you may step on and destroy.

One must also bear in mind that removing any of those living in them is against the law. These include fishes, corals, and even empty shells. If you wish, secure a permit and make certain that your reason for doing so will not cause harm or endanger these things.

Such habitats are very fragile and the slightest miscalculation can lead to their destruction. This is the reason that everyone is encouraged to help protect and conserve them. People should always be aware that no matter how little these things are, they contribute something to the balance on earth.
