Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the small breeds of dogs in existence today. It is often classified as a toy dog by the AKC. The breed owes its origin to the United Kingdom, but it has become very popular in several countries today. It is currently rated by the AKC as the 18th most popular dog breed in the United States. The increased popularity of the breed makes it easier to find puppies when in search of them. There are many breeders who specialize in breading cavalier king puppies for purchase by the public.

Throughout history, members of this breed have been considered to be lap dogs. Adults that are full grown compared in size with adolescents of larger breeds of Spaniel breeds. Fully grown adults rise to the height of one foot or slightly more, while the weight category lies between 4 to 8 kilograms. Traditionally, cavaliers do not have their tails docked. Those that have curly hair are considered as straying from breed standards.

A typical quality of the breed is feathering. Feathering occurs at the terminals such as feet, legs, ears, and tails. The feathering should not be cut in order to ensure according to conformation requirements. English Toy Spaniel is closely related in resemblance and appearance to Cavalier King. This s hugely because the two breeds share an origin. Diversion in the breeds only started to occur one hundred years ago.

The breed is known to have three four main colors according to the AKC. The colors vary a lot in how they are combined and how they appear on the coat. The coat may have a plain color or a combination of colors forming unique patterns. Main colors observed are brown, black, tan, and white. How this colors are combined is taken seriously in the breed standard. If the combination does not conform to breed standards, the individual is qualified.

The breed is known for being affectionate, playful, and patient. These qualities make them a good choice for family pets because they are good with other pets and small kids. They are also friendly with other pets and breeds. They have a high ability to adapt to new environments and families. However, for proper coexistence with other pets, some training during early years may be necessary.

The breed has a moderate level of intelligence in working and obedience. They are a good company because they like cuddling a lot. The breed is recommended for medical patients and elderly people. The dogs are also good therapy dogs. They exhibit a high level of activity and sportsmanship. They excel in obedience, agility, and conformation shows.

Maintenance is very simple for this breed too. All they need is weekly brushing, with no need for trimming. However, if the slippers and feathers become extremely dirty as a result of playing outside, it may be necessary to trim them. There are several maintenance supplies on the market that one could choose from.

Cavaliers do not suffer from many diseases. However, they are particularly known for mitral valve disease. Mitral valve disease develops into heart failure, and eventual death. Mitral valve disease is very prevalent in this breed and is the main cause of death among adults.
