Finding Suitable Ohio University Apartments

By Elizabeth Kelly

In most cases when a student decides to attend a university it will involve leaving home and finding a place to live near to their place of study. A large number of universities have block accommodation on site but this is often oversubscribed. When trying to find Ohio university apartments there is a little homework to be done first.

One of the first things to consider is how much money you have each month to pay for rent, bills and food. A simple one bedroom apartment in Athens, OH will start from around six hundred dollars per month and a three bedroom, two bathroom property will be approximately fifteen hundred and this will include kitchen appliances and some basic furniture. Electric and water may be billed separately so it is worth checking this out before signing.

When starting your search for accommodation a good place to start is at the university. Notice boards around campus often advertise flats that are available for students to rent. It is also worth talking to fellow students who have found accommodation in the area to see if they can help with local contacts and offer any advice. Many online sites are also available with listings of accommodation for students.

Many students find it difficult to manage money when away from home for the first time and will take multiple jobs to pay for their accommodation. A good way to reduce your costs is to share with other students who attend your university. This is a great way to get your own place and it also means you are not footing the total cost of rent and other bills.

When committing to renting a property it is worth taking a little time to think about the additional costs of any furnishings or electrical goods you may need. Fully furnished flats are available but will be more expensive and most are offered as part furnished. Another point to consider is that the first months rent will usually be double as it will include a refundable damage deposit.

Many of the large sites that cater for students by providing apartments will often have extra facilities for tenants use. Fitness centers, pools and study areas are sometimes offered and free WiFi is becoming the norm. Other things such as cafes, games rooms and bars maybe on site but these are not usually included in with the rent.

One of the good things about complexes that offer student accommodation is that they are often very close to the university. Most are within a short walking distance which will save students money as they will not have to pay for public transport. Many universities will put on free shuttle buses to some parts of the neighborhood especially if there are many students staying in the same area.

Another thing worth looking into is the length of tenancy offered by the owner or manager of the apartments. Most will offer between a 6 to 12 month tenancy but a few may offer longer depending on their policy. Some longer term tenancies are worth considering as discounts can be obtained especially if you are paying the rent in advance.
