Tips For Choosing A Moving Company Brookline Area Customers Will Find Helpful

By Beryl Dalton

Moving requires many details to be taken care of efficiently, perhaps the most important is finding a reputable company to safely transfer one's belongings. Customers need to know that their valued possessions are in good hands and will arrive unharmed to their destination. By following these guidelines for hiring a moving company Brookline MA residents can ensure that the service they choose is a competent one.

While the Internet is a great place to look for information, it may not be the best choice where searching for movers is concerned. It's better to take a more local approach by asking friends and neighbors if they can recommend someone, look through the yellow pages, or ask a real estate agent for referrals. A good start is to identify at least three companies which have physical offices and have been in business for ten years or more.

Representative from each moving service should be willing to provide the customer with an in-home price estimate, any who will not do this should be crossed off the list. Stopping by their offices and making sure that they have their own fleet of trucks, permanently marked with the company's name is advisable as well, and the customer should also ask for some references and the DOT and MC license numbers of the business.

It is the customers' duty to know exactly what they are paying for, and they should never accept a quote based on cubic feet. Only once there is complete understanding of all terms being agreed to, should the customer sign anything. Movers must by law supply the client with a copy of the publication which clearly outlines the rights and responsibilities of the customer.

Even if the mover seems to check out initially, it pays to take this a step further and use the Internet to get an even more accurate picture. The best way to do this is to visit the SaferSys website of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and enter the DOT license number. A profile will appear for the mover which can indicate to the customer that all information they were provided is correct and that the business is in good standing.

Furthermore, customers can contact the Better Business Bureau and the Safety Violation and Consumer Complaints hotline to inquire about any negative reports against the mover which may have been filed. Checking out some of the websites online which make it their purpose to call out scam moving companies and warn others to avoid them is also good to do.

If anyone other than those hired appears on moving day, the company should be dismissed immediately. Insurance is another detail to inquire about, usually several packages are available. Protection against breakage is generally only provided if the movers are also packing the items, and it also depends on the total weight of the shipment.

A contract termed a "bill of lading" must be provided which clearly explain all rates and charges, insurance specifications, relevant dates, name and address of mover, minimum and maximum amount to be charged, and method of payment. All details must be fully understood before signing, since this is a binding agreement.
