5 Tile Patterns That You'll Love!

By Mike Hartwick

Whether on the wall, floor, indoors or out, tile is an amazing material. It can transform a room by creating beauty and style like no other. Luckily there are many tile patterns to help accomplish whatever it is your space needs with ease. Here is a small taste of 5 of the best patterns to help get you started.

The straight lay, is the simplest tile pattern of all. Just like its name states the tiles are laid down so that they all line up evenly in a straight line. This is the most commonly seen and used pattern because of its great looks and the fact that it is so easy to install. If you are going to be laying the tile for your project yourself, and do not have any experience, this should be your first choice.

Another way to go is the diagonal pattern. This is like the straight lay but with this one, the tiles are laid at a forty five degree diagonal. Because of this, when you are looking at the pattern you will see the widest part of the tile. That means the pattern will make the space or room appear to be bigger than it really is. For this reason it's a smart choice if you have a small area.

The running bond tile pattern is also a really popular and commonly used choice. Since it is also seen in the brickwork of buildings it is also known as the brick pattern. This running bond is very good looking but also is a secret used by decorators. They love to use it to cover up flaws and imperfections, which it excels at.

The herringbone tile pattern is aptly named as it resembles the body of the bony Herring fish. It's sophisticated and elegant appeal has made it one of the most desired patterns especially in Europe. This is a fantastic choice if you need to make a narrow space look wider. However, this is one pattern definitely best left to the professionals as it takes considerable skill to pull-off correctly, so if you are not one; don't try to install the herringbone tile pattern. Instead, hire someone with experience so you can enjoy the full beauty of this gorgeous pattern.

The Versailles tile pattern goes by many names. It's also called the modular and sometimes the French pattern. Unlike other choices it uses tiles that are 4 different sizes. It can almost look random but it is actually very well planned. So, unless you are a professional you should hire someone else to install it for you. The Versailles not only works inside but for the patio too!

From the simple straight lay to the deceptively complicated Versailles, there is a pattern for everyone and every style. All of these patterns can look incredible when used correctly, in the right space, and with the proper materials. So decide what you need from your space, do some research, choose your pattern, and enjoy.
