Design Ideas For A Budget

By Brooke Rumlow

Not everyone puts the same level of importance on interior design. And if something is not especially important to you, you probably will not put as much effort into it. But even if you do not care too much about it, you likely would not deny that a well-designed interior can set a positive atmosphere that helps you relax and makes a positive first impression for visitors. Even if you do not want to spend large amounts of time, money or effort sprucing up your home's interior, there are some simple, cheap improvements that can be made.

Different backgrounds can completely alter the tone of an image. The walls are basically the background of a room, so the easiest way to change the feel of the whole room is to change the color of the walls. You might be surprised by how much freshness a new shade of color can lend.

Painting can be costly in both time and money. So if you do not want to redo an entire room, sometimes just painting a single wall can create effective contrast.

If a single wall is still too much of a project, you might try highlighting some of the key features. Some color accents on the rims of the furniture, the door and window frames, or the door itself, can draw attention and effectively create accents. Wallpaper is another good way to add color.

Remember that you are not just working with a 2-Dimensional surface. There are plenty of opportunities to use the surfaces above and below to create a sense of style. The relatively barren surface of the ceiling can be spruced up with stylish, yet inexpensive lighting fixtures.

Even more than the fixture, the light itself can establish a mood for a room. Depending on what you want out of the room, you can choose between different sources, levels and placement of light. For example, soft floor and table lamps can be used to precisely place light to establish a romantic atmosphere, while using brighter bulbs and more natural light can create a cheerful, relaxing tone.

As for the floors, there are ways to add personality without having to redo the whole surface. One of the most popular and effective ways is to place an area rug. It can draw attention to the key areas of the room, and you can place other furniture on top of it, such as a coffee table.

But by far the cheapest items are the ones you already own. If you have items that can be repurposed, think of ways you could use them to add freshness to a different area. Have an old chest in the attic? It might make a great coffee table. An old cabinet might make a good secondary TV stand. It can be fun to see familiar items in a new light.

Once you are happy with your interior design work, the next step would be to keep it looking great. Clutter is practically the nemesis of good interior design. When items pile up, it can be very distracting. To clean out clutter, the best way to start is get rid of the non-essentials. Once you have cut down to what you need, you can organize it with shelving or bins.
