Moroccan Style Living Room

By Darren Hartley

A Moroccan style living room is defined by vibrant colors and exquisite furnishings. A distinctive metal lantern above the centre table casts soft, interesting shadows throughout the space. An extravagant desert tent is created by draping jewel-toned fabrics loosely over the walls. Such decorations add a Moroccan flavour to the living space.

There is no limit to the attention given to detail when it comes to a alluring Moroccan style living room. Plaster ceilings are embellished with an amber chandelier and Moorish symbols. Finishing touches is what Moroccan interior design is all about. Every light fixture, every tile is each given appropriate attention.

A Moroccan style living room features an intricacy in its tile work, which is a distinct characteristic in its design. However, for homeowners on a budget, an inexpensive and DIY-friendly alternative to zillij-inspired tiles are stencils. A graphic pattern stencilled in black can transform a simple white fireplace surround into a striking focal point.

Architectural influence and bold patterns are part and parcel of a Moroccan style living room. The arches and double doors on a mirror evoke an entrance to an ornate Moroccan palace. Inspired by mosaics found in quaint Moroccan courtyards, drama is provided by a hand-painted porcelain Marakesh sink installed in an adjacent powder room.

Works of art in a Moroccan style living room do not necessarily equate with drawings and paintings. Character is instantly added to a living space with the installation of an authentic Moroccan chest, table or armoire. A colourful cabana can be a focal point to a living area, featuring octagonal Moroccan side tables in various sizes and patterns. An assortment of vibrant hanging lanterns placed overhead provides an echo to its colorfulness.

Glam is not a new concept as far as a Moroccan style living room is concerned. Moroccan leather ottomans or poufs are idyllic additions to a comfortable, casual seating area. These ottomans or poufs are typically hand embroidered and available in a wide variety of colors and styles. To give a Moroccan design a contemporary twist, white poufs, metallic silver tables and patterned throw pillows in icy shades of blue may be thrown in for good measure.
