Board & Care: A Care Option To Consider

By Rue Nichols

There are many types of eldercare and often the majority of care is provided by family members who help a parent or loved one take on daily tasks that are no longer able to be completed independently. One option that is becoming increasingly common is the choice of board and care residential care facilities.

These board and care homes, which also are known as boarding homes, group homes or residential care facilities, are basically private homes that have been transformed into a facility for older adults to live. They are meant to be safe, clean and welcoming, resembling a family home. This level of ambiance can be a great comfort for someone who has sold their home and belongings and must move elsewhere. After all, these facilities are truly residential homes.

In these places are also other residents, thus they can have social interaction also. Individual residents have their own bedroom and usually with their own bathroom. These rooms including the bathrooms should be very safe to elders, with equipment for the needs of the elders set up. Meals also are provided in these facilities, including laundry and housekeeping, and there should be personnel who can help the elders in grooming, bathing, including dressing up and in the giving of medications.

A board and care home should provide eldercare service and attention of the highest level, and this can be provided with a facility with staff always on hand to help a resident, and also with only five or six residents at the most. When there are already many residents, the level of individual care and attention can get less, and this can be observed in the assisted living communities and nursing homes.

Board and care facilities are not all created equally. Some are fantastic, provided plenty of activities with friendly, well-trained staff.
