Blank Walls Are A Blank Slate: How To Decorate Them

By Nataile Comber

When you buy a brand new home, it becomes a blank slate for you to leave your own decorative mark on. There are numerous touches you can put on a house to make it distinct and personal. Even a simple, windowless wall can be a canvas on which to create beauty

The decorations you put on a windowless wall can have a surprisingly large effect on the look and feel of a given room.

Of all of the factors the affect the look and personality of a room, paint is probably the most dramatic. It tends to be the baseline that gives a person their first impression when they walk into the room. In a home's interior room, where there are no windows present, most people veer towards soft, comfortable colors. If you want to add additional flourishes, you might use stencils, or nice-looking wallpaper.

After color, the next most striking aspect of a wall is its finish. There is a large variety of different styles available, so you are likely to find one that is particularly suited to the design scheme of your home. Depending on your own style, you might choose smooth over textured, shiny over matte, or patterned over plain. You can even apply your favorite piece of artwork to the wall by having it printed as a full-size mural.

Different wall coverings can be used to great effect when it comes to giving a wall a unique style and tone. Repeating patterns, such as wall flats, grass cloth or wainscoting, can add dimension to a wall, while cloth items, such as tapestries, can add both color and texture.

The use of art is the most common way to fill a wall with style. On large, windowless walls, most people place multiple pictures at consistent angles, sometimes stacked, one over the other, and sometimes at a pleasing, diagonal angle. Shelves, showcases, bookcases and shadow boxes can be used to display items that reveal your particular interests.

In any sort of decoration or design, the key is to be consistent. Variety, contrast and hybrid styles can work if balanced properly, but a lack of a consistent vision will make the home appear chaotic and imbalanced. For a consistent look, always try to choose compatible colors, and if possible, find similar styles, such as frames with similar edges to wooden furniture pieces.

In most ventures, planning ahead will be a great benefit, and interior design is no different. When you decide a steady look and feel, it can do much to bring the rooms together and create a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
