Tile Patterns In Less Than 5 Minutes

By Mike Hartwick

Tile is one of the most useful materials when it comes to covering floors and walls. However, you can't just set it down anyway you please. Luckily there are many tile patterns to choose from that can help you get the look you truly desire.

For someone who is looking for a simple pattern, the straight lay is a fantastic way to get started. This is particularly true if you want to do the job yourself to save some money, or just get some DIY experience. With the straight lay tile pattern, the tiles are set in a straight line and are even with both of the tiles on adjacent sides. It's as easy as that.

Another take on the straight lay is what is known as the checkerboard pattern. It is basically the same tile layout pattern, however instead of using any color or design, it uses only black and white tiles. By alternating them, a checkerboard like look is created. This can be a very upscale choice particularly if you decide on tiles made from marble. However, there are many less expensive ways to go too, like vinyl.

The running bond tile pattern is a long time favorite. It may sometimes also be called the brick pattern as it is the most commonly seen in brickwork. The tiles are set so that each one is even with the center of the tile in the row before it just like you'd see when looking at a brick wall. This is option that not only works on the floor but wall as well. In fact it is often used in the kitchen and bathroom to form a back splash.

The herringbone and Versailles tile patterns are two more alternatives that are much more intricate. Resembling the bony skeleton of a herring, the herringbone tile layout is a complex choice that really shines. The Versailles is normally used with stone tiles and is actually made to look as if it is random. However it is definitely not, and requires several different sizes of tiles. Both should be installed by a pro., due to their difficulty.

It's clear to see that there are many tile patterns to choose from. Actually, there are quite a few more than described here. To help make sure your project is a success be sure to always listen to your gut feeling when picking your pattern.
