Provide the house key to your professional house cleaner, but only if you fully trust them. If they will be there over an hour and you are thinking of giving them your home key, be certain they are honest, reputable and hard-working. Go over their references and do some background research on the company they work for. If you are using a cleaning firm, make sure it has an excellent Better Business Bureau rating.

Never let a stranger inside. It is essential you do not do this, even if the stranger gives you a convincing story or states they need your assistance. Some folks will enter to scout for security systems, and upon seeing you lack one, will resolve to return at a later time.

A big problem with home security is having overgrown landscaping. Overgrown landscaping gives crooks shelter when breaking into your home. All of your windows and doors should be able to be seen from the streets without having bushes covering them. Also within the yard, do not allow your landscaping to grow to a point where thieves can hide.

Keep your windows locked. It seems like an obvious step to take, however many people simply forget to check the locks on their windows. Thieves are always looking for the easiest way into a home, and doors and windows are among the first entrance points they check. This includes screened windows too, as screens can pop off quite easily.

If your security system alarm goes off and scares the burglar away, you can be fined for a false alarm. If the police send someone to check your property in response to a security alert and no burglar is there, it is considered a false alarm. You can be fined and charged because your security system worked.

If you work from home or have your own business, do not put your address or phone number on your website. Disgruntled customers or thieves could come to your home and try to get inside. Instead, get a post office box and have customers or associates send you mail to this address.

A home security systems can mean the difference between being a victim and protecting yourself. Don't be a victim: invest in a good system that will alert you in the event of an intruder and keep you, your family and your belongings safe. There is nothing like the feeling of safety that a home security system can provide.
