Some Good Natural Ways To Control Mosquitoes

By Shawn Hunter

There are many artificial methods of controlling insects and pests today. Most of them involve use of chemicals, which are effective at achieving the required effect, but also cause a lot of harm to the environment and both human and animal health. That among many other reasons makes it necessary to resort to natural methods that do not involve the use of chemical products. This article highlights some of the natural ways to control mosquitoes in a place.

Clearing bushes and long grass around the house is the first step towards controlling mosquitoes. The nocturnal nature of these insects allows them to hunt for blood mostly at night. Otherwise, during the day, they stay in bushes and long grasses and hide until nightfall before they can come out. Removing all hiding places around the house forces them to relocate and move away. The bushes can also be sprayed with natural repellents to force them out.

Secondly, dark or dimly lit houses are good hiding sites. Such sites include walls, beds, wardrobes, and basements. To prove this, one should shake their clothes in the wardrobe. Removing dark sites can help in controlling efforts. Doors and other openings on the house should also be closed to keep them out.

Mosquitoes lay eggs to produce young ones. Their eggs are laid in stagnant water as the most suitable breeding ground. Stagnant water may result from water collecting in holes and containers after raining. It takes a few weeks and new happy insects start moving around in search of human blood banks. Eliminating such sources of water destroys important breeding grounds.

Another suitable way of controlling mosquitoes is by using animals and insects that naturally prey on them. Such animals include tadpoles, which eat eggs laid by the insects. They also feed on young insects in water before they can mature and fly away. That would reduce their population greatly eventually leading to total elimination in the area.

Attracting bats around the compound can get the job done too. Research states that bats can consume several thousands of mosquitoes per night. Having a few of them can reduce the numbers of the insects considerably. Natural repellants like citronella essential oil can also work effectively. Making and lighting homemade citronella candles inside the house can keep the insects out.

There are plants that are natural repellents of Insects like a mosquito. One of such plants is lemon balm. The plant is easy to plant and is very efficient at repelling the insect. It contains essential oils like geranial, geraniol, and citronellal which are known to be natural repellents. The oils can be 10 times better at the task than most manufactured products.

Finally, the insects can be repelled effectively by lavender oil. A few drops of the oil should be added into vegetable oil and then applied on exposed skin. The mixture that results has a very sweet smell to humans, but very repelling to a mosquito.
