How To Bend Copper Pipe

By Hedrick Lepsch

So you have a shed, a playhouse, or even a small guesthouse that needs shingling. Br running through the steps below you should be able to create a beautiful, shingled roof.

There are a few items that everybody would be wise to keep around the house just in case something needs a quick fix. These tools are cheap and easily kept in a junk drawer or even in a file cabinet somewhere in the office. Stock up on these essential items and you'll be ready for almost any sticky situation:

Step 1 - Lay the Roofing Felt Cut the roofing felt so that it is a little bit longer than the first section of the shed roof. Lay down the felt on the roof spreading it flat and begin nailing the felt down at the lower edge of the roof using only a few nails spaced every few feet. Work nails up the sides of the felt as well holding it down to the roof. After the felt is nailed down take your utility knife and cut the felt flush to the roof. Do the same with the next layer of felt making sure to overlap the first layer by at least a few inches. Continue this process to the peak of the roof where you will let the final piece overlap to the other side of the roof. Move to the opposite side of the roof and install the felt exactly the same way as the first making sure to have overlap with the piece of felt at the top of the roof that you left hanging over.

It has been reported that NASA has sent duct tape on every single space flight since the 1960's. If they trust it to fix problems aboard the space shuttle, you can certainly trust it to fix up most things around your house or office. Pick some up at your local grocery or hardware store for around five dollars.

Step 3 - Starter Shingles Install the starter row of shingles across the lower edge of the roof nailing it down. The starter row shingles should be put on with the rain slots (slits in the shingles) upward. Place your first starter shingle flush with the drip edge. Have the shingles overhang the side of the roof by one shingle. Three tab shingles (which you are probably using) Use four nails per shingle. The nails are evenly spaced horizontally between the bottom shingle and the shingles with the rain slots. Make sure not to nail above the sealing strip. Move along the side of the roof attaching shingles flush with each other remembering a one inch overhang as you complete the starter row. Let the last set of shingles overhang off the back of the roof (they will get trimmed later).

Step 3 Bend the Pipe Now that the pipe has been placed and locked in you can rotate the whole bender 90 degrees so it is facing upwards. You then take the forming handle and pull it upwards toward the other handle. Make sure to pull on the handle with steady pressure in one continuous motion. If you think that it will be difficult to bend the pipe slide a steel pipe over the forming handle to give yourself extra leverage to bend the copper.

Now just continue on with the following rows of shingles making sure the shingles are staggered to prevent leaking. Place the first shingle flush with the drip edge, the lower edge is placed flush to the rain slots of the row underneath. Continue to place the shingles making sure they are laid tight to each other. When you get to the bend of the roof shingles should extend 3-4 inches above the bend with the rain slot being above the bend. Nail the shingles over the bend making sure that there is five inches or less from the bend to the rain slot.

Basic Tool Kit For your average household repair, you will need a basic toolkit. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a hammer, some screwdrivers, a wrench or two and some pliers. Most problems can be corrected with these simple tools. This set shouldn't cost you more than thirty to fifty bucks.

You should now be finished up and have good looking, shingled roof on top of your shed. A Shed should not be a problem for you but as the jobs grow larger the amount of time and the skilled required for the job grows as well. If you feel like you will not be able to get a project done on time consider hiring a general contractor to give you a hand in getting the project done quicker. Best of luck!
