Some Challenges Experienced By Latchkey Children

By Karen Martin

These are kids who lies in the age brackets of between five and thirteen years of age and they tend to take care of themselves before and after school routine on regularly basis without any close supervision of adults mostly because their parents may be working. The term self-care is mostly used to describe latchkey children.

The term latchkey is a term which is used to mean the door of any house. A key is attached to a string and then attached to the kids neck or the parents hides that key under a mat or under any other property around the house door. The effect of these kinds of kids depends on their ages. Some of the common effects which are experienced by these kids include loneliness, boredom and fear especially to those kids who are ten years or below.

The early teens are mostly vulnerable to the peer pressure which leads to unbecoming behaviors like use of illegal drugs, smoking, sexual promiscuity as well as alcohol abuse. These kind of behaviors have a possibility of stemming these kids from peer pressure to actually misbehave, unspent energy or even hostility due to lack of proper attention from an adult.

Some of these kinds of kids usually possess some of positive energy like developing a self-reliance adoption method to some of difficulty situations and enhancement of need to positively contribute to the visible household requirements. The performance of these kids has been viewed to be much deteriorating as compared to those kids who receive good supervision and attention from their parents after school.

In a research carried out, middle school students who were left alone at homes for more than three hours in a day yielded greater levels of behavioral problems, increased levels of depression and very minimal levels of self-esteem when compared to other students. Kids who originated from lower families are usually associated with huge externalizing concerns like hyperactivity and conduct disorders without forgetting problems with their academic lives.

These kids are usually likely to be obese since they say indoors rather than playing outside when they are done with the school routine. It is also viewed that these kids are mostly exposed to unhealthy snacks rather than getting a healthy snack prepared for them after school. Researchers also found that latchkey kids probably were exposed to dangerous risks of influence and therefore they were at higher risks of getting involved in delinquent acts such as vandalism and stealing.

This is because these are kids who usually wander freely after they are done with their daily schooling routine. This is because there is a main difference between children who get close monitoring of their behaviors especially when they are out of school. It has been viewed that those kids who wander freely without their parents knowing what their children are doing end up being fed up with a lot of wrong information.

At times you may find out that most parents usually take call for their kids when there is an emergency situation. At times you will notice that these kids are making several calls because they are simply bored or lonely and therefore they are in need of companionship.lastly it is recommendable to understand your kids and their different stages of growth.
