How Weed Control In Compass Point Is Done

By Ronald Gibson

Weed control refers to the botanical element of pest control, which aims at stopping weeds from offering competition to domesticated plants and livestock. Weeds that are usually aimed are those that are injurious or noxious. Several different methods of controlling weeds have been invented and they work with varying levels of efficiency. Weed control in Compass Point is offered by several service companies at affordable rates.

Weeds are characterized by certain qualities that make them worth removing from among plants. First, weeds are plants that have very little or no value at all. Value may be in the form of energy, nutritional, material, or medicinal. Weeds also grow and germinate very fast and easily. Lastly, weeds also compete with useful crops for nutrients, water, light, and space. The definition of weed is usually dependent on the context.

Weeds offer competition to different levels. Some of the factors that determine the level of competition are prevailing climatic conditions and season. Young weeds do not do any harm to crops. According to research findings, weeds may be harmless for up to 3 weeks. However, beyond three weeks, their demand for space, water, light, and nutrient increase and they become competitive.

Weed propagation often occurs through seeding. Some of the weed species that propagate themselves through seeding include chickweed, hairy bittercress, groundsel, cleaver, speedwell, fat hen, and annual meadow grass. These weeds produce seeds in large number several times in their seeding season. Some produce seeds for the entire year. The seeds produced germinate at different times of the year. Some lie dormant for several years before they eventually germinate.

Several methods of weed control exist, including coverings, manual removal, tillage, thermal, seed targeting, stale seed bed, crop rotation, and buried drip irrigation. Others include animal grazing, and use of herbicides among many others. Each method works with varying levels of efficiency. One may decide to use one method or combine various methods on one piece of land.

The method called covering employs certain covers called weed mats. These covers are applied on a piece of land to cover it, creating a hostile environment for the survival of the weeds. The covers prevent light, but may also prevent air from reaching the weeds. When the cover is left in place for several weeks, the weeds will eventually die off. The cover can be removed and transferred to a different part of the field.

The use of manual removal of weeds is also applied in certain places. The weeds are manually plucked out of the soil and disposed. One must make sure to pluck the weed from the roots to prevent it from growing again. This method can be very hectic and slow if the area is very large.

In rice paddies, farmers have been known to use irrigation to control weeds. Rice paddies are irrigated with too much water until the land becomes soaked with water. Rice survives because it is water-resistant while any other plant that is not water-resistant is killed by the water.
