The Applications Of Gun Drill

By Scott Reynolds

Deep drilling is done using many devices and gun drills are among them. Gun drills are fluted drills whose name came from the fact that they were invented to be used in production of guns. The process of gun drilling is different from other conventional drilling processes in many different ways. The first difference is in the unique geometry incorporated in the head of the equipment. The gun drill tool also has one effective cutting edge.

The gun drill tool incorporates guide pads which burnish the hole as the drilling process continues. This allows the hole being drilled to remain very straight. The burnishing also helps to achieve a very round hole, which has a precision diameter. Introduction of coolants and elimination of chip is done very differently in this process compared to other forms of drilling.

The gun drill tools incorporate small holes that extend to the cutting edge from the head. Cooling of the cutting edge is accomplished by pouring coolants through this hole. Coolants are necessary for lubrication. Chip is removed through another hole located externally on the tool. Modern gun drills are employing carbide tips more commonly than metal tips. This is meant to make them more durable.

The introduction of gun drilling was for drilling gun barrels. Standard twist drilling presented many shortcoming that necessitated the invention of this method. Straight and accurately sized holes were hard to achieve over depths five times greater than the diameter in twist drilling. This problem was in the armament industry as well as many other industries.

The level of accuracy in the size and straightness of gun barrels must be very high. Depths of gun barrels are usually many times their diameters. Gun drilling was meant to be a solution to this problem. Other industries also use this techniques besides the armament industry. They include oil and gas exploration, manufacturing, energy, plastic injection molds, engines, and diesel fuel components.

It is possible to drill different depths and diameters of holes using this method. They can achieve a depth-to-diameter ratio of over 300 to 1. The method remains effective in a wide range of materials including various metal, earth, wood, plastic, and a wide number of synthetic materials. The speed at which drilling can be done depends on a number of factors. These factors include the types of material to be drilled, diameter of the drill, and rotational speed.

Currently, many global companies are involved in the production of gun drilling tools. Products from various producers can be bought from local and international markets alike. This makes ordering products made in any state easy. Thus, one can order for products from manufacturers in any country. Efficient courier service have improved delivery times, making orders to be delivered up to the doorsteps.

The effective use of these tools requires a lot of expertise in the drilling industry because they are specialty devices. Manufacturers understand this fact and attach very elaborate instruction manuals to be read by users before use. Most companies also have return policies to assist buyers with returning wrong orders or faulty devices.
