Advantages Of Having A Basement Remodeling York PA

By Roger Gorman

For some reason, we Americans aren't that good about using our basements. They represent almost an entire extra floor of possibilities and what do we do with them, store stuff. Stuff we never use but could bring ourselves to get rid of.

Even without windows, it is surprising at how much bright a basement room can be when you install recessed spotlights into the ceiling. You can create the illusion of extra space and light by converting the existing set of stairs to a more open staircase.

The beauty of a basement is that it is somewhat detached from the rest of the household. Normal rules need not apply. This is an opportunity to experiment with different looks or even to hone your painting and decorating techniques. If you set it up for a specific use and it doesn't pan out, set it up for something else. You haven't lost anything because you weren't really using that space, anyway.

Another use for a remodeled basement is a male sanctuary, or man cave. This is someplace for him to go and "be himself" without worrying about offending feminine sensibilities. You can learn a lot about a guy by observing how he outfits his personal space.

Happy Hour. The basement is a great place to install a wet bar and a music station for parties, informal gatherings or hanging out on a rainy day. Cellar temperatures (54-59F) are perfect for brewing beer, especially British-style real ale.

Whatever other use you assign to the newly-remodeled cellar, add a sofa bed and it turns into a spare room with a flick of the wrist. Your guests will appreciate not having to climb the stairs in the middle of the night if you have space to put in a spare en-suite bathroom. Plan ahead, and install a disabled/elderly-friendly bathroom suite or wet room. Your former storage space can turn into a welcoming refuge for Mom and/or Dad if they decide to spend their late retirement years under your roof.

A basement is a room full of endless possibilities. You can turn it into a gym, a bedroom, a nursery, a playroom, hobby room. Don't think of it as losing a storage space, think of it as gaining an adventure.
