How A Gopher Exterminator Works

By Cherry Mercer

If one is fond of growing vegetables or fruits in his backyard or in his garden, then most likely he will be dealing with a lot of problems from small furry creatures called gophers. Of course a great idea would be to immediately call up a gopher exterminator who can do away with these pesky creatures. Exterminators are experts when it comes to this field but surprisingly, a lot of their methods may be done by almost anyone.

The first thing that exterminators would do would be to try to push them out their holes by using water. As much as possible, even exterminators would not want to kill these furry little creatures but would instead try to chase them away and trap them. So the safest way to exterminate the gophers would be to drive them away by drowning out there hole.

If the water tactic was a failure, then the experts have some metal traps as back up. Traps like these are made out of metal and are usually place on the mound or the holes that gophers made so that when they go out, they will be trapped. It is more effective if one puts some food so the little rodent will come out faster.

Many exterminators also use gopher flares in order to smoke them out just in case the two above mentioned methods did not work. All they do is they light up the flares and throw it into the hole. Gophers would react to the smoke and usually just crawl out.

Now there would be cases in which the gophers are very strong and stubborn that they will not escape the whole no matter what happens. During these cases, the exterminators will have no choice but to kill the gophers because nothing else works. Usually, experts would be using one of the two poisonous materials that are found in their arsenal.

Now poison bait is often used because it is cheaper to use than gas. What professionals would do is that they would get some chemical like strychnine and make the gophers think that it is food. Once the gophers take the bait, they will eat the poison and will instantly die on the spot.

The more effective but more expensive type of poison that also can be used in aluminum phosphide which experts use when the problem is getting our of hand. The good part about this poison gas is that it is not a residual poison and is not dangerous for humans. This is by far the most efficient method but should only be used when all other options have been used up.

So basically, those are some of the ways a gopher exterminator can do his job. The first three methods may be done by ordinary people because the materials can be bought anywhere at any time. However, the last two methods must be done by professionals only because there are extremely big risks that are involved when handling poisonous substances like the bait and the gas.
